History

New Mills Football Club: A Brief History

New Mills FC, based in Derbyshire’s High Peak, has been part of organised football in the town since 1886. Originally known as New Mills St George’s, the club first played friendly fixtures before joining competitions including the North Cheshire League and Manchester League. After several moves around the town, New Mills settled at Church Lane in 1922, beginning a proud period that brought two Manchester League titles, four Derbyshire Divisional Cup wins, crowds of around 2,000 and a number of players progressing directly to Football League clubs.

Church Lane remains one of the club’s great strengths. Set opposite St George’s Church, with Kinder Scout providing a striking backdrop, it is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque grounds in non-league football. The club’s facilities now include a floodlit pitch and an all-weather surface used by local schools, the wider community and New Mills Juniors.

After further success in the 1960s under Joe Martin, the club faced more difficult times following its move to the Cheshire League in 1974. By the early 1980s, football activity had ceased, but the name was soon revived when local side Birch Vale and Thornsett FC adopted the New Mills AFC identity and began progressing through the Lancashire and Cheshire League and Manchester League.

The Millers enjoyed another memorable spell in the mid-to-late 1980s, winning trophies and reaching Derbyshire Cup finals under former player Ray Coverley, who later became chairman. The club continued to develop from within, with managers including Andy Bowers and Alan Peatfield, the latter guiding New Mills to Derbyshire Cup success and promotion to the Manchester League Premier Division.

In 2004, New Mills re-joined the North West Counties League, having been founding members in 1982. Under Tony Hancock, the club enjoyed one of its most successful modern periods, winning the Second Division Trophy in 2007, the Division Two title in 2007/08 and the League Challenge Cup in 2008/09. Promotion to the Evo-Stik League was narrowly missed that season after a final-day defeat at AFC Fylde, but the club soon achieved its goal. In 2010/11, Ally Pickering led The Millers to the North West Counties Premier Division title and promotion to the Northern Premier League, while the club also gained FA Charter Standard Adult Club status.

Life at Northern Premier League level brought both proud moments and challenges. New Mills finished ninth in their first season and later reached the play-offs, but difficult campaigns followed, including relegation battles, managerial changes and a winless league season in 2015/16 that brought national attention. The club continued to rebuild, returning to the North West Counties League and seeking stability on and off the pitch.

Recent years have shown that resilience again. Dave Birch and Mike Norton brought renewed momentum before the Covid-19 outbreak curtailed the 2019/20 season, with the team in strong form and enjoying a Derbyshire Senior Cup run. In 2021/22, a young squad finished third and narrowly missed out in the play-offs. After further managerial changes, Chris Baguley and his team led New Mills to a fine 2025/26 season, finishing third and reaching the play-offs before departing with the club’s thanks.

Former players Nathan Neequaye and Sam Scott were appointed joint managers in June 2026, beginning the latest chapter in the club’s long story.
In March 2020, New Mills AFC became New Mills Football Club after changing entity to a Company Limited by Guarantee — a modern structure for a club with deep roots, proud traditions and a strong place in the local community.
