This weekend saw a near total wipeout of NWCFL fixtures, with Stockport Town's home game against Irlam on Saturday afternoon being one of many to fall foul of the conditions. 60 Great North Pies were due to be served to match-going fans and would have otherwise gone to waste following the postponement, however all was not lost as the Town players & staff donated the unsold pies to a local homeless charity.
The Wellspring are an independent charity based in Stockport who provide assistance to people who are homeless or at risk of losing their home. The charity was set up in 1990 by Fr Constance Botter and has supported the people of Stockport for over thirty years since. More information on The Wellspring can be found at their website here: www.thewellspring.co.uk
Comment from Stockport Town General Manager Jonothan Gaines: "When the decision was made to postpone our home game against Irlam due to the recent bad weather, we had 60 of our award winning Great North Pies in stock for the game. Wellspring Stockport is at the heart of the Stockport Community and our first thought was to donate these pies to such a worthwhile cause. All our players & staff attended the fantastic facility on Saturday afternoon to pass over the pies, but to spend time with the attendees at the centre. We hope everyone enjoyed the pies and we look forward to supporting Wellspring Stockport again in the very near future"
Comment from Player/Manager Paul Turnbull: "It is fantastic as a Step 5 Non League Club to be able to return some support to our local community through donating pies to the Wellspring Stockport, a facility for disadvantaged and homeless people. It is a great facility and along with the pies and food on offer, a facility which has so much value to the community especially in the recent freezing conditions. It was fantastic to see everyone interacting and talking all things Football. We will be working with our players and staff to do monthly donations of unwanted clothes and food"
