Fri 7th March 2025 | League Awards | By Martin Fallon
The Winners of the Reusch Goalkeeper of the Month Awards for February 2025 have been announced this week by the NWCFL.
PREMIER DIVISION
The North West Counties League Premier Division Goalkeeper of the Month Award for February 2025 has gone to James Hodges of Cheadle Town.
James came through the academy at Chester before joining Hyde United at 16-years old. He was number two for a while before joining Tadcaster Albion in the NCEL to get him game time. He moved to Stockport Georgians for their inaugural NWCFL season and spent two seasons there before moving to Cheadle Town at the start of this season.
He has been in outstanding form all season for Cheadle, with his presence and shot stopping abilities has helped Cheadle Town become one of the best defensive teams in the Premier Division. His last two games in January saw him keep two clean sheets, and he brought this form into his February games.
His first game in February saw Cheadle win 3-0 at Litherland REMYCA. He marshalled his defence superbly and kept his tenth clean sheet of the season in the process, with two superb saves with just five minutes to go vital. Next up was South Liverpool at home, with James pulling off a fine stop in the early stages to keep the scores level. At 1-0 up he pulled off another fine save, denying South with a stop from 12-yards. He made two more crucial saves in the second half, including one in stoppage time as he tipped an effort over the bar, keeping his fourth successive clean sheet in the process.
Four soon became five, with another clean sheet coming in the 1-0 win at FC St Helens. He had little to do in this game with Cheadle defending superbly and the Stripes wasteful of the little chances that they were given. The fifth game of the month saw James concede his only goal of the month in a 1-1 draw with Glossop North End. It was another game of few clear cut chances, but James made a vital stop from Ollie McKay towards the end of the first half. He also saved from Tom Lawless' first time shot in the second half, and was powerless to stop Glossop's equaliser with ten minutes to go.
Congratulations to James on his Award!
FIRST DIVISION NORTH
The Goalkeeper of the Month award for the First Division North has gone to Kyle Trenerry of Ashton Town.
Kyle came through the ranks at FC Halfiax Town, before moving onto Farsley Celtic, Guiseley and Matlock. He moved into the Northern Counties East with Yorkshire Amateur, Pontefract Collieries, Silsden and Albion Sports. He started this season at Northern Premier League side Brighouse Town, before moving to Ashton in January.
His involvement in the first month saw him play against Euxton and Garstang with Trenerry keeping two clean sheets. The second half saw him conceded twice with the game ending 2-2, with nothing he could do to stop either goal, one being a penalty.
The next game was a visit to Bacup Borough in a game that again ended 2-0. Bacup led 2-1 at the break in a half devoid of chances, but the second half saw Kyle in tremendous form to earn his side a point, no more than saving in the last minute to deny Bacup what would have been a winner.
The final game of the month saw Kyle come into his own, pulling off a number of superb saves to earn his side the win. He pulled off an excellent stop from Jacob Gregory after eight minutes, and an even better one just after the half-hour to deny John-Jo Morris. After Ashton took the lead he organised his defence well, with Ashton taking all three points after adding a second late on.
Congratulations to Kyle for his performances in the month!
FIRST DIVISION SOUTH
There winner of the January 2025 Goalkeeper of the Month Award for the First Division South is George Scott of Eccleshall.
George came through the academy at The New Saints before moving to AFC Telford United. A loan spell followed at Bridgnorth, before moving to Market Drayton Town and then Shifnal Town in the Midland League Premier Division.
He only joined Eccleshall in October from Midland Premier Division side but he helped steady the ship straight away with just 11 goals conceded in his first 7 games. He is a calming influence on his defence and also gives a great deal of confidence to the Eccleshall back line
Coming into February, his first game was a trip to former club Market Drayton Town. Despite conceding early he made two key saves to keep the score at one before Eccleshall levelled. The second half he had to stay alert, marshalling his defence before his side scored two late goals to win.
Next up was Barnton away on a Tuesday night. After making a save in the opening minute, Eccleshall took the lead after just four minutes. Scott didn't have much to do after that but was instrumental in keeping his side ahead in the 67th minute, parrying away a free kick from distance before getting down rapidly to the follow up shot and make a crucial stop. He saw the game out for his third clean sheet since joining.
The final game was at home to New Mills, with Scott again keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win for his side. He again kept control from a succession of crosses into the box and remained calm and positive as New Mills looked to get back in the game after conceding an early goal.
Two clean sheets and one goal conceded in three games shows his value to an Eccleshall side in good form.
Congratulations George!
